CHAPTER 8: PROCEED TO COSMIC SOLITUDE →When we calculate the rotational velocities of galaxies (Kepler's laws and Newtonian gravity: $v = \sqrt{GM/r}$), mathematics eventually breaks down: Galaxies spin so fast that the gravitational pull of their visible stars isn't enough to hold them together. Stars should have been flung into space like sling-stones. Yet, they are not. This is because something exists there, something that does not interact with light, something we can pass through, yet exerts immense gravity: Dark Matter.
Comprising 27% of the universe, this matter is 5 times more abundant than ordinary baryonic atoms (i.e., us, the Earth, and the stars). We are not actually settled at the center, but rather tiny, transient glimmers of light nestled in the cosmic pits created by this immense dark network (Cosmic Web).
Dark matter particles (WIMPs or Axions) are blind to the electromagnetic force. This raises a chilling possibility: immense "dark mountains" or invisible stars might be passing through the very room you are in, even through your own body, and because your cells operate with light, you would never perceive it.
In 1998, astronomers discovered that the universe was not merely expanding, but was expanding with acceleration (pressing the gas pedal). Galaxies are moving away from each other at an ever-increasing speed each second. We call this negative pressure and repulsive force Dark Energy. Einstein's cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) in his Field Equations precisely represents this intrinsic outward push possessed by space itself.
As space expands, new space (vacuum) is created, which means more dark energy. This is a vicious cycle. If the repulsive force of Dark Energy increases over time, a cosmological doomsday scenario known as The Big Rip will occur.
At the end of time, galaxies will recede from each other faster than the speed of light. Then gravity will succumb to this repulsion, and star systems will disperse. On the final day, planets will break free from their orbits. And in the very last second, even the electromagnetic force will yield to dark energy; the very atoms that compose you will literally be physically torn asunder. The universe is a colossal, lethal balloon ready to swallow us whole.
If the universe is expanding even faster than the speed of light (Hubble Constant $H_0 \approx 70 \text{ km/s/Mpc}$), then why isn't the distance between the Earth and the Sun increasing? Or why aren't the atoms in your body moving apart from each other right now?
Imagine space as a flexible rubber band, and gravity as a tight knot tied on that band. Our Solar System and the Milky Way galaxy are "local" regions, tightly bound to each other within the fabric of spacetime by Einstein's tensor metrics ($g_{\mu\nu}$).
Dark energy pulls that rubber band from both ends. The band stretches (empty space expands), but the knot is so tight that the weak force of dark energy cannot untie that knot (the Solar System). We are sailing in resilient vessels, glued together by gravity, upon this vast, expanding ocean.
What we perceive as empty space is, according to quantum mechanics, a boiling "quantum foam" filled with virtual particles that wink into and out of existence in a billionth of a second. Physicists have managed to manipulate the zero-point energy of the vacuum using a method called the Casimir Effect ($F = -\frac{\pi^2 \hbar c}{240 a^4} A$), creating a repulsion that is the exact opposite of gravity (achieving negative energy density).
While Einstein-Rosen bridges (Wormholes) exist mathematically, they instantly collapse under their own gravity. The only theoretical way to keep a wormhole's throat open is to pump this "Exotic (Negative) Matter" into the hole to counteract gravity.
However, Stephen Hawking's Chronology Protection Conjecture warns us: If you create a shortcut through space using traversable spacetime, that path could also turn into a "time machine to the past." The universe abhors this paradox; the moment you open a wormhole, quantum fluctuations (radiation) might echo infinitely within the hole, causing the system to explode.
An object cannot travel faster than light *within* space; however, there is no limit to the speed at which space itself can stretch and contract. Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre's metric ($ds^2 = -c^2 dt^2 + [dx - v_s(t)f(r_s)dt]^2 + dy^2 + dz^2$) describes a "warp bubble" created by compressing (contracting) spacetime in front of the ship and expanding it behind. The ship doesn't actually move; space slides underneath it.
Within this bubble, relativity does not apply, and time dilation is not experienced. However, this design comes with terrible costs. Firstly, it requires "Jupiter-mass" amounts of exotic (negative) energy to achieve this distortion.
Secondly, and most fatally: As the ship travels faster than light, it accumulates high-energy cosmic radiation encountered along the way in front of the bubble (like a broom). When the ship reaches its destination and stops (when the bubble collapses), this accumulated, immense radiation bursts forward as a "Quantum Shockwave" (sonic boom), instantly incinerating the target planet, station, or civilization. Surfing through space means piloting a death machine.
The Big Bang is not actually the beginning of everything, but merely a physical event in "our region." According to the theory of Eternal Inflation, space is like water in a boiling pot. The high-energy quantum vacuum (inflaton field) continuously expands, and where this expansion slows down/stops, "Bubble Universes" are born. Our 14-billion-year-old universe is just one of trillions of bubbles in this infinite and boiling ocean.
What makes this cosmological model most unsettling is its combination with String Theory (String Landscape). The equations of string theory allow for precisely $10^{500}$ different vacuum states (different physical laws). Nature assigns a random set of physical laws and varying gravitational strengths to each of these bubbles.
This addresses the question, "Why is the universe perfectly tuned for us?" There are trillions of dead, dark, or instantly collapsing bubbles (universes). We evolved within that fortunate bubble (Anthropic Principle) where the dice, by sheer chance, landed on a configuration that supports carbon-based life.
Why does matter possess a "weight" (mass)? When the universe first exploded, everything (all particles) was massless, moving through the universe like pure energy, at the speed of light. However, as the universe cooled, a mathematical event called "Symmetry Breaking" occurred.
The Higgs Field, encompassing every square centimeter of the universe, suddenly shifted from a zero-energy state to an active (frozen) one, following the "Mexican Hat Potential" ($V(\phi) = \mu^2|\phi|^2 + \lambda|\phi|^4$) model. Energetic particles began to get caught in this invisible field, rubbing against it and slowing down. This deceleration (inertia) imparted "Mass" to them. Photons, not interacting with this field, still travel at the speed of light today; electrons, however, get bogged down in this field, slowing down and acquiring mass.
This process is remarkably similar to the "Render Weight" parameter in video games. The Higgs field is a universal software constraint applied by the simulation system to impart a sense of "Solidity" to objects. Without it, atoms couldn't bond, molecules couldn't form, and we could never exist; everything would remain a data stream flowing at the speed of light.
Paul Dirac's quantum equation ($i\hbar \gamma^\mu \partial_\mu \psi - mc\psi = 0$) proved that every form of matter must have an "identical twin" (Antimatter) with an opposite electrical charge. At the moment of the Big Bang, the universe's energy furnace should have yielded equal amounts (50-50 percent) of matter and antimatter. Upon meeting, they should have instantly annihilated each other, converting into 100% pure energy. Thus, the universe today should have been nothing more than a vast, entirely empty expanse of pure light (a sea of photons).
However, a physical "Error" occurred. During the period known as "Baryogenesis," CP Symmetry (Charge and Parity) was violated. For every $1,000,000,000$ (1 Billion) antimatter particles produced, precisely $1,000,000,001$ (1 Billion + 1) matter particles were created.
While those billions of pairs battled and annihilated each other in less than a billionth of a second, the remaining, forlorn, unmatched "+1 particle" (Matter) was left utterly alone in the universe. Every star you see in the sky, this screen you are reading, and your very own body; all are built upon that "billion-to-one" anomaly, the ash leftover from a cosmic slaughter. We are the children of a mathematical error (a Bug) in the universe.
