OPEN CONTENT →When we calculate the rotational speeds of galaxies (Kepler's laws and Newtonian gravity: $v = \sqrt{GM/r}$), mathematics fails at a certain point: Galaxies rotate so fast that the gravitational pull of their visible stars is not enough to hold them together. Stars should have been flung into space like slingshot stones. But they are not. Because there is something invisible that does not interact with light, that we can pass through, yet exerts an immense gravitational force: Dark Matter.
Comprising 27% of the universe, this matter is 5 times more abundant than ordinary baryonic atoms (that is, us, Earth, and stars). We are actually not settled in the center, but rather small, transient flashes of light embedded in the pits created by this colossal dark network (Cosmic Web) in space.
Dark matter particles (WIMPs or Axions) are blind to the electromagnetic force. This raises a chilling possibility: Right now, colossal "dark mountains" or invisible stars might be passing through the room you are in, or even through your very body, and since your cells operate with light, you would never feel it.
In 1998, astronomers discovered that the universe was not only expanding but also accelerating its expansion (stepping on the gas). Galaxies are moving away from each other at an ever-increasing speed every second. We call this negative pressure and propulsive force Dark Energy. The cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) in Einstein's Field Equations precisely represents this intrinsic tendency of space itself to push outward.
As space expands, new space (vacuum) is created, which means more dark energy. This is a vicious cycle. If the repulsive force of Dark Energy increases over time, a cosmological doomsday scenario called The Big Rip will occur.
At the end of time, galaxies will move away from each other faster than the speed of light. Then gravity will succumb to this repulsion, and star systems will disperse. On the last day, planets will break free from their orbits. And in the final second, even the electromagnetic force will yield to dark energy; the very atoms that compose you will literally be physically torn in half. The universe is a colossal, deadly balloon preparing to swallow us.
Given that the universe is expanding even faster than the speed of light (Hubble Constant $H_0 \approx 70 \text{ km/s/Mpc}$), why isn't the distance between Earth and the Sun increasing? Or why aren't the atoms in your body moving away from each other right now?
Imagine space as a flexible rubber band, and gravity as a tight knot tied on that band. Our Solar System and the Milky Way galaxy are "local" regions tightly bound together in the spacetime fabric by Einstein's tensor metrics ($g_{\mu\nu}$).
Dark energy pulls that rubber band from both ends. The band stretches (empty space expands), but the knot is so tight that dark energy's weak force is not enough to untie that knot (the Solar System). We are traveling in robust boats, glued together by gravity, upon this vast, expanding ocean.
What we perceive as empty space is, according to quantum mechanics, a boiling "quantum foam" filled with virtual particles that pop into and out of existence in a billionth of a second. Physicists have managed to manipulate the zero-point energy of empty space using a method called the Casimir Effect ($F = -\frac{\pi^2 \hbar c}{240 a^4} A$), creating a repulsion exactly opposite to gravity (achieving negative energy density).
Although Einstein-Rosen bridges (Wormholes) exist in mathematics, they instantly collapse on themselves due to gravity. Theoretically, the only way to keep a wormhole's throat open is to pump this "Exotic (Negative) Matter" into the hole to counteract gravity.
However, Stephen Hawking's Chronology Protection Conjecture warns us: If you create a shortcut in space by bending spacetime, this path could also turn into a "time machine to the past." The universe abhors this paradox; the moment you open a wormhole, quantum fluctuations (radiation) could echo infinitely within the hole, causing the system to explode.
An object cannot travel faster than light within space; however, there is no limit to the speed at which space itself can expand and contract. Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre's metric ($ds^2 = -c^2 dt^2 + [dx - v_s(t)f(r_s)dt]^2 + dy^2 + dz^2$) describes a "warp bubble" created by compressing (contracting) spacetime in front of the ship and expanding it behind. The ship itself does not move; space slides underneath it.
Within this bubble, relativity does not apply, and time dilation is not experienced. However, this design comes with terrible costs. Firstly, it requires "Jupiter-mass" exotic (negative) energy to achieve this warp.
Secondly, and most fatally: As the ship travels faster than light, it accumulates high-energy cosmic radiation encountered along the way in front of the bubble (like a broom). When the ship reaches its destination and stops (when the bubble collapses), this colossal accumulated radiation shoots forward as a "Quantum Shockwave" (sonic boom), instantly incinerating the planet, station, or civilization at the arrival point. Surfing in space means piloting a death machine.
The Big Bang is not actually the beginning of everything, but merely a physical event in "our region." According to the theory of Eternal Inflation, space is like water in a boiling pot. The high-energy quantum vacuum (inflaton field) continuously expands, and where this expansion slows down/stops, "Bubble Universes" are born. Our 14-billion-year-old universe is just one of trillions of bubbles in this infinite and boiling ocean.
What makes this cosmological model most unsettling is its combination with String Theory (String Landscape). The equations of string theory allow for exactly $10^{500}$ different vacuum states (different laws of physics). Nature randomly assigns a different law of physics and gravitational strength to each of these bubbles.
This situation answers the question, "Why is the universe perfectly tuned for us?": There are trillions of dead, dark, or instantly collapsing bubbles (universes). We evolved within that lucky bubble (Anthropic Principle) where the dice coincidentally rolled a code that specifically supports carbon-based life.
Why does matter have a "weight" (mass)? When the universe first burst forth, everything (all particles) was massless and moved at the speed of light, like pure energy within the universe. However, as the universe cooled, a mathematical event called "Symmetry Breaking" occurred.
The Higgs Field, which permeates every square centimeter of the universe, suddenly transitioned from a zero-energy state to an active (frozen) state by sliding down the "Mexican Hat Potential" ($V(\phi) = \mu^2|\phi|^2 + \lambda|\phi|^4$) model. Energetic particles began to get caught in this invisible field, frictioning against it, and slowing down. This deceleration (inertia) gave them "Mass." Photons do not interact with this field, which is why they still travel at the speed of light today; electrons, however, get bogged down in this field, slowing down and forming mass.
This process is very similar to the "Render Weight" parameter in computer games. The Higgs field is a universal software constraint applied by the simulation system to give objects a sense of "Solidity." Without it, atoms could not combine, molecules could not form, and we would never exist; everything would remain as a data stream flowing at the speed of light.
Paul Dirac's quantum equation ($i\hbar \gamma^\mu \partial_\mu \psi - mc\psi = 0$) proved that every particle of matter must have an "twin" (Antimatter) with an opposite electrical charge. At the moment of the Big Bang, equal amounts (50% - 50%) of matter and antimatter should have emerged from the universe's energy furnace. When they came together, they should have instantly annihilated each other, converting 100% into pure energy. Thus, the universe today should have consisted of nothing but a colossal and utterly empty beam of light (a sea of photons).
However, a physical "Error" occurred. During the period called "Baryogenesis," CP Symmetry (Charge and Parity) was violated. For every $1,000,000,000$ (1 Billion) antimatter particles produced, exactly $1,000,000,001$ (1 Billion + 1) matter particles were created.
While those billions of pairs fought and annihilated each other in a billionth of a second, the remaining, unfortunate, unpaired "+1 particle" (Matter) was left utterly alone in the universe. Every star you see in the sky right now, this screen you are reading, and your very own body; are built upon that "one in a billion" anomalous ash leftover from a universal slaughter. We are the children of a mathematical error (Bug) of the universe.
We have explored the colossal boundaries of the universe, the dark energy that tears space apart as it expands, and the one-in-a-billion mathematical error between matter and antimatter. Trillions of galaxies, quintillions of stars, and an unimaginably vast ocean of space... But where is everyone?
If this system (simulation or physical universe) is so vast, why are we not receiving even a single signal from space? Is life much rarer than we think, is there a universal "Great Filter" that destroys advanced civilizations, or is everyone deliberately silent to hide from external hunters? We step into the silent and dark forest, into Cosmic Solitude (Fermi Paradox).
